A CREATIVE MOMENT - Exodus 17:1-7 Materials: (a) One or more large, preferably shallow, bowls - half-filled with water - and set out at or near the communion table; (b) small, smooth river or beach pebbles, sufficient for everyone in your congregation to have one. Give each member of the congregation a pebble as they arrive for worship. Ensure that everyone has a pebble. After the Exodus reading - a dramatic reading in which the congregation read the part of "the whole congregation of Israel" - have a time of silent confession, during which the members of the congregation have the opportunity to silently bring their confession to God by coming and placing their pebble in the bowl of water. A dramatic aspect of this might be that as the pebbles are placed in the bowl, the water level is raised to the point where it overflows the bowl, a reversal of the image of the water bursting forth from the rock in the wilderness. Conclude with the word of absolution/declaration of forgiveness. |
